  19. QUESTION:  It is important for me to get some straight facts.  Is it safe to
  20. use marijuana during pregnancy?
  21.

  24. ANSWER:  No.  Aside from legal issues, marijuana poses risks to the baby not
  25. only during but even before pregnancy.
  26.      Use of marijuana prior to pregnancy has been associated with decreased
  27. fertility, and should be avoided by both partners if pregnancy is desired.  In
  28. men, it can reduce the number of sperm and their ability to move.  In women,
  29. it may cause shorter menstrual cycles.
  30.      During pregnancy, marijuana consumption poses an increased risk of
  31. spontaneous abortion and adverse effects on the child.  Marijuana's main
  32. psychoactive ingredient--which is largely responsible for the "high"
  33. associated with this drug--is known to cross the placenta and affect fetal
  34. development.  Its effects are linked to decreased birth weight and early as
  35. well as prolonged labor.  Several studies suggest it may even affect the
  36. gender of the baby.
  37.      Evidence of marijuana also appears in breast milk of nursing mothers,
  38. which may also pose a risk to the child.
  39.      Restrictions on human studies with marijuana make it impossible to obtain
  40. conclusive information on its effects in pregnancy.  However, based on animal
  41. studies and the available human information, the best advice to men and women
  42. contemplating pregnancy, and women who are pregnant or nursing, is to abstain
  43. from using marijuana, as well as other drugs and alcohol.
